Serious But Not New: The
Trouble in Korea
By Robert F. Dorr
this page: Eventually piling up a 19-to-1 victory record,
the Hellcat came as a rude surprise to Zero pilots in its first
engagement, which was over Marcus Island in September,
1943. Enemy pilots were expecting Wildcats and the Hellcat
was several quantum leaps up from the earlier aircraft. The
F6F reigned supreme in the PTO, accounting for just under
4,500 shootdowns. (Photo by John Dibbs/ planepicture.com)
on the cover: The business end of a Hellcat, as seen
by John Dibbs’ lens. Note the authentic gunsight, helmet
and goggles that complete the image. Not as streamlined
as the Mustang and others, the Hellcat was effective
and dependable in the extreme. (Photo by John Dibbs/
