Yakovlev Series / 1940
;e Yak series of Russian fighters totaled a
stunning 36,700 airframes from 1940 to 1947.
Built in four variants—the Yak 1, 3, 7, and 9—it
was the standard Soviet fighter of “;e Great
Patriotic War” and beyond. A conventional
airframe with increasingly powerful engines and
adequate armament, the Yak design was simple,
reliable—and producible. Its influence upon the
course of the European war is undeniable.
